Hearing loss and ear problems
Who this is for
Children and adults with reduced hearing, blocked ears, ear infections, discharge, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or ear pain that your GP would like assessed.
See a doctor urgently (same day) if hearing drops suddenly in one ear. Sudden hearing loss can need prompt treatment.
How we assess
The surgeon examines the ears with a microscope or endoscope and reviews a hearing test (audiogram) and tympanogram. Scans are sometimes needed.
Common causes and options
-
Wax or debris: removal in the rooms with a microscope and suction.
-
Glue ear and middle ear infections: watchful waiting, medication or grommets (see our grommets page).
-
Outer ear infections and surfer's ear (exostoses): ear cleaning and drops; surgery is occasionally considered.
-
Eardrum perforation: may heal on its own; repair (myringoplasty) is an option for some people.
-
Age-related or noise-related hearing loss: usually managed with hearing aids through an audiologist.
Risks
Microsuction can cause temporary dizziness, discomfort or, rarely, injury to the ear canal or eardrum. Risks of ear surgery depend on the operation and include infection, bleeding, change in hearing, tinnitus, dizziness, change in taste and, rarely, facial nerve weakness. Your surgeon will explain the risks that apply to you.
