Septoplasty (straightening the nasal septum)
Who this is for
People with a long-term blocked nose caused by a bent (deviated) septum, the wall of cartilage and bone between the nostrils. Septoplasty is a functional operation to improve breathing; it is not cosmetic surgery.
How we assess
The surgeon looks inside the nose, often with a nasal endoscope, and checks for other causes of blockage such as allergy, enlarged turbinates or sinus disease. Medical treatment is usually tried first.
The operation
Done under general anaesthetic through the nostrils, with no external cuts. The bent parts of the septum are reshaped or removed. Turbinate reduction is often done at the same time. Soft splints may be placed and removed at follow-up.
Risks
-
Bleeding
-
Infection
-
A hole in the septum (perforation)
-
Numbness of the front teeth or the tip of the nose, usually temporary
-
Blockage that continues or returns
-
Rarely, a change in the outside shape of the nose
-
Risks of general anaesthetic
Recovery (typical)
Usually a day procedure or one night in hospital. Expect a blocked nose for one to two weeks. Most people take one to two weeks off work. Avoid nose blowing, heavy exercise and flying for the period your surgeon advises. A follow-up checks healing.
