Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
Who this is for
Adults and children who snore loudly, stop breathing or gasp during sleep, or feel unrefreshed and sleepy during the day. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is linked with daytime sleepiness, poor concentration and a higher risk of accidents (for example, when driving), so it is worth having assessed.
How we assess
An ENT assessment looks for parts of the nose and throat that narrow the airway: a blocked nose, large tonsils or adenoids, or the soft palate. A sleep study, arranged through your GP or a sleep physician, is usually needed to confirm OSA and its severity.
Treatment options
-
Non-surgical: weight management, sleep position, reducing alcohol before bed, nasal sprays, CPAP (a mask that keeps the airway open) and mandibular advancement splints made by a dentist. CPAP is the standard treatment for moderate and severe OSA in adults.
-
Surgery: in selected people, surgery to the nose (septoplasty, turbinate reduction), tonsils or palate may improve airflow or make CPAP easier to use. In children, adenotonsillectomy is a common treatment for OSA.
Surgery does not suit everyone with snoring or sleep apnoea, and results vary between people.
Risks of surgery
Risks depend on the operation and include bleeding, infection, pain, change in voice or swallowing, persisting snoring or apnoea, and the risks of general anaesthetic. Throat surgery in adults with severe OSA needs careful anaesthetic planning. Your surgeon will discuss the risks that apply to you.
