Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy
Who this is for
Children and adults with recurrent tonsillitis, quinsy (an abscess beside the tonsil), large tonsils or adenoids that block breathing during sleep, or other tonsil problems your GP has referred for review. The decision depends on how often infections happen, how severe they are and how much they affect daily life.
How we assess
The surgeon will ask about the number and severity of infections, time off school or work, snoring and breathing pauses during sleep, and examine the throat and neck. For children with snoring, a sleep study is sometimes recommended.
The operation
Tonsillectomy is done under general anaesthetic through the mouth, with no external cuts. Adenoids (at the back of the nose) are often removed at the same time in children (adenotonsillectomy). The operation usually takes under an hour.
Risks
-
Bleeding is the most important risk. It can happen in the first 24 hours or, more often, 5 to 10 days after surgery. Any bleeding after tonsillectomy needs urgent medical review: call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department. A small number of people need a return to theatre.
-
Pain, often worse around days 3 to 7, and sometimes ear pain
-
Infection
-
Damage to teeth, lips or gums from the mouth instruments
-
Change in voice, or fluid coming back through the nose (usually temporary)
-
Persisting symptoms, or snoring that does not fully resolve
-
Risks of general anaesthetic
Recovery (typical)
Most patients go home the same day or after one night. Allow about two weeks off school, childcare or work, and stay close to a hospital during that time. Regular pain relief, plenty of fluids and normal eating help healing. White patches in the throat are normal while it heals. A follow-up is arranged after surgery.
